After years of internet usage we’ve amassed a variety of quick and easy words that have no substantial meaning in the dictionary but are almost globally understood (and commonly used). Have you been wondering what is up with the English language lately and how words suddenly have unexpected alternate meanings? If you are then you qualify as an amateur who needs to learn what these words mean stat.

So, to save you from sounding primitive, we’re compiled a list of online lingo you need to be aware of:

1. Throwing Shade

This refers to being outwardly and very obviously insulting or degrading of someone (in public).

Eg. She threw a lot of shade on her!

2. Swag

The synonym being cool, this word is used to describe someone or something that has extreme attributes of cool-ness and/or sexiness.

Eg. Girl’s got swag!

3. Lemme

A shorthanded version of let me. Because we’ve got too much swag to say let me!

Eg. But first, lemme take a selfie!

4. Basic

Basic refers to a stereotypical, obvious and predictable behavior that verges on boring.

Eg. She is so basic!

5. Twerk

Popularized by the one and only Miley Cyrus, twerking refers to a dance with squatting hip movements, usually done in a sexually provocative manner.

Eg. Did you see the video of Nicki Minaj twerking?

6. Bae

An abbreviation of Before Anyone Else, this word is used to refer to someone close to your heart.

Eg. I am going out for dinner with Bae.

7. Doe

The chill version of “though”, because aren’t we all a little bit too cool to say “though”?

Eg. That party Doe!”

8. Slayed

This means to be the boss of anything you do.

Eg. She slayed the song!

9. Killin’ It

Also means to power through what you do (like a boss!). See #8.

Eg. Babe, let’s kill it tonight!

10. I Can’t Even

This is used to show an overwhelming amount of emotion where you are so out of words that you can’t even! Get it?
